What is Cohousing?

Cohousing is an intentional community of private homes clustered around shared space.

Each attached or single family home has traditional amenities, including a private kitchen. Shared spaces typically feature a common house, which may include a large kitchen and dining area, laundry, and recreational spaces. Shared outdoor space may include parking, walkways, open space, and gardens. Neighbours also share resources like tools and lawnmowers.

Households have independent incomes and private lives, but neighbours collaboratively plan and manage community activities and shared spaces. The legal structure is typically a homeowner association or housing cooperative. Community activities feature regularly-scheduled shared meals, meetings, and workdays. Neighbours gather for parties, games, movies, or other events. Cohousing makes it easy to form clubs, organize child and elder care, and carpool.

Cohousing facilitates interaction among neighbours and thereby provides social, practical, economic, and environmental benefits.

What is New West Cohousing?

New West Cohousing is a newly forming cohousing group based in the historic New Westminster, BC. We’ve chosen New West for its vibrant community, central location, and plentiful outdoor amenities.  We are excited at the prospect of building a future here and contributing to the continually growing fabric of the City.

Our goal is to create a fun, livable space with a group of like-minded people who value inclusivity, a sense of community, and the environment. Our vision for New West Cohousing is an active community who participate in various outings and social activities together, while balancing the need for individual space and privacy. We accept people of all ages and all backgrounds, and want to create a welcoming space where everyone feels they have an equal voice in the community.

If the lifestyle and location interest you, we are actively recruiting members to the group and encourage you to reach out or come to one of our social events!
